This store closed down and Edmond started Hickeys Fabrics with one of the Hickeys brothers who left the business soon after. This was a period when making your own garment was a very popular value solution before the start of cheap clothing retailers. Goods are sold at a marked-down price compared to the original retail price, somewhere between 25-50% off, Miiller said. The building is located in Ingersoll Township, near Bullock Creek High School.

The business will focus on selling unused overstock items from department stores. Then, in 2020, Miiller lost her job at Midland Christian School when it closed. This led the sisters to sell overstock products out of a pole barn, but this did not have bathrooms, heating/cooling, and other building amenities.

His son Eamon Donnelly expanded the business by opening more stores across the country and introducing home furnishings to the product range as dress fabrics became a more specialist business. Hickeys Fabrics has been at the heart of busy Henry Street for generations, providing a treasure trove for those seeking soft furnishings, dressmaking fabrics, trimmings, craft supplies and more. However, they have two separate income lines through it since they each sell different products. For instance, Maxwell primarily sells rugs, sheets, towels, blankets, cookware, and household goods and appliances, while Miiller sells vinyl and tile flooring, tools, furniture and household goods. About five or six years ago, Maxwell began buying pallets of overstock products from big-box retailers as a side income in addition to working at Dow, and ran auctions for people to buy the bulk pallets online.

Residents may recognize the current building as the former home of Crane Elementary School, a Bullock Creek School District administration building, and the Secrist Doll Factory. Co-owner Lori Miiller said local residents regularly tell her about how they went to school in the building or that they worked at the doll factory. In Hickeys stores you’ll also find all the leading pattern books with designs for kids outfits, debs, brides, bridesmaids plus lots of ideas for special occasion and casual dress making. At Hickeys Fabric stores, our staff are there to help you with any dress making queries for that unique bridal dress or that special outfit. However, the building sat vacant for several years once the doll factory moved out of it. Luckily, Miiller and her sister, Lisa Maxwell, saw the potential of the building for their businesses.

Our Stores
The property was first home to a log cabin school that opened in the late 1800s, which burnt down in 1918. Our story began in the 1940’s when Edmond Donnelly, our founder, moved to Dublin and was employed as a fabric buyer in Hickeys which was a general merchants store.
